A look at what’s going on at the Home at the Quarter-Acre Wood

Get the Yucca Out of My Yard

Get the Yucca Out of My Yard

yuccaUsually when you purchase a new home that’s not actually “new” (let’s say, about 40 years old) spring is full of surprises. There should be some rogue daffodils and iris sprouting up about the yard somewhere, perhaps a peony or two along borders, and maybe even a few flowering bushes around the foundation.

So it makes me very sad to know our little house must have been neglected through the years, because, other than what we have planted, we only have one thing growing in our yard – it’s a yucca (aptly named in my opinion). How can this be?  How can there not be one spot of spring color on a whole quarter-acre lot? Besides, I thought yucca were for places like Arizona and New Mexico (although it seems to be thriving quite nicely here).

I hate to do this to any plant that seems to be loving life in its designated spot, put I’m afraid the yucca is out of here. In it’s place, I’m planning a cottage garden full of vibrant color and craziness. Maybe I can find a nice “out-of-the-way spot” for transplanting this sticky spiked green thing. . . like way on out in the yard of someone else. Bye bye pointy plant, hello butterfly lovin’ flowers.

Test Drive Your Garage Door Design

Test Drive Your Garage Door Design

garage door designWho knew garage doors could make such a difference? Well, I had my suspicions, but I have to say I am very pleased with our purchase. One thing I can recommend is that you take your time and shop around. I was going to settle for simple white doors with windows, but discovered that for just $75.00 total (not per door) I could get the upgraded textured panels and metal carriage hardware — I’m so glad I asked.

If you don’t know where to start when it comes to your garage door design, take a look at this great site I found by Overhead Door where you can upload your house photo and basically test drive garage doors of all colors, shapes, windows and price points. You can even print your design with specifications, which makes comparison shopping so easy.

Of course one thing leads to another in the world of house remodeling, and now I think we need a large carriage light above the doors instead of that tiny thing stuck between the two. I’ll let you know how that one goes.

House Number Pots are Easy and Inviting

House Number Pots are Easy and Inviting

Numbered pot plantersSpring is near, and I’m dressing the house appropriately. One of my favorite new projects is the house number pots shown here. I have no idea where I found this idea last year but I love it, especially since we still do not have numbers on the outside of our home. . . yes, it has been nine months since we moved. My goodness, that’s long enough to birth a baby — I should probably get on this project (the numbers, not the birthing).

I found my pots on clearance at Hobby Lobby for a $1 each, but you can find them in all shapes, sizes and colors. I cut stencils for painting the house numbers using my Cricut machine and sheets of Duck Brand duct tape paper. I began painting with a coat of matte finish Mod Podge so the black paint wouldn’t seep under the stencil, then followed with two coats of outdoor paint before pulling off the stencil. You can also hand-paint your pots or just use number decals or stickers.

It’s easy to rotate plants as the seasons change, but the look is always inviting. I love that my pots are starting to show a bit of patina from last fall’s mum planting. Just remember, it’s best to bring your pots indoors for the winter to avoid breakage.
