Vacation Bible School Sneaked Up on Me

Vacation Bible School sneaked up on me this year and for the first time in a very long time I wasn’t exhausted before day one. After four years of coordinating the event at our local church and many more as craft girl and designated decorator, I finally handed the reins to somebody, anybody, else. I always have a blast at Vacation Bible School and consistently have been blessed by doing what I did, but it was finally time to pass along those VBS blessings to someone else.

Vacation Bible SchoolLast week was full of stereotypical summer vibes for my little man and me. We went to the zoo on Monday, splashed at the water park on Tuesday, caught a kids movie on Wednesday, played at the park with friends on Thursday and whiled away a few hours at Chuck E. Cheese on Friday, I’m almost ashamed to say that it wasn’t until Friday afternoon that I realized Vacation Bible School was beginning in just a few days (and it made me smile). Normally, the week before VBS I and my reluctant son spend most of our days (and some nights) decorating the church, wrapping up loose ends, counting registrants and begging a few people to graciously fill a few of the thin spots. My husband also got in on the action and took over most of the domestic duties for the better part of many Julys. Somebody had to feed our son and make sure we had clean underwear.

It’s not that I walked away from the event entirely this year. I am lending a hand with the scads of preschoolers attending this week and taking photos of all the happy, smiling faces along the way. I even spent a few hours adorably decorating the church yesterday, but only at the beckoning of another person’s vision.

Now if you know me at all, you can probably appreciate just how big of a deal this really is. Once I have my hands at ten and two, I don’t normally let go of the wheel. What I can tell you is that as much as I have missed the planning, painting, directing and doing from time to time, I can absolutely say I have not regretted my decision to step down as coordinator let someone else be blessed by coordinating VBS.
