Better than Sick Leave

I’m not suppose to get sick — I’m the mama. But since my husband brought home some funky germs and infected the whole family, I at least did my motherly duty to get sick during the weekend (the entire weekend) so that I could be back on the job bright and early (real early) Monday morning.

I used to think moms never got sick. I mean, how could they — they have families to run? I don’t remember my mom ever being sick when I was growing up, but maybe she just pushed through the pain because there wasn’t an alternative or perhaps she did have her aches, pains, sniffles and shivers, but only on the weekends when Dad could otherwise occupy us.

If I had been around when Mom was ill I’m sure I would have noticed, because even though I had to fulfill my motherly duties yesterday (and not much else) my two-year-old seemed to sense that I was not at the top of my game and made the proper adjustments. That, I will take — it might be better than sick leave.

Popcorn is in the Bag

paperbagI love to snack on fresh popcorn but sometimes I hate to drag out the loud air popper, especially if my son is sleeping right down the hall. So I finally tried the microwaveable brown paper bag technique I’ve heard about for years, and it works like a dream.

Just add about 1/3 cup of uncooked popcorn to a lunch-size brown paper bag, fold over the top a couple of times and microwave it between two and three minutes, depending on your microwave. Let it cool for a bit, pour it into a bowl and top with salt and/or butter. It’s yummy, quick and easy.

Upscale Tired T to Cute-T

Upscale Tired T to Cute-T

myupscale t-shirtUpcycling a t-shirt just doesn’t get much easier than this. And if you’re anything like me, you have a seemingly endless supply of subjects for this project. Do these things breed like bunnies in that dark, overstuffed drawer?

The post at It’s Been One of Those Days gives good step-by-step instructions with great results, but her great photos are almost direction enough. I chose an uncomfortable class reunion t-shirt that I haven’t worn for almost five years (I can’t believe they printed the wrong decade on that thing!!) and turned it into a really cute tank that I actually might wear during the lazy days of summer — it would look really cute over my swimsuit.

If you have a sewing machine, sharp scissors and about 30 minutes, you can upscale your own shirt (or shirts) for the sunny days on the way. Come on gals, show me what you got.
