VBS Is In the Books

VBS Is In the Books

Whew! Another wonderful VBS is in the books and I plan to put up my feet and bask in the calmness of life. . . as much as a busy four-year-old boy will allow. I donned a new hat for Vacation Bible School this year — that of coordinator for the whole event. I enjoyed it, but it certainly was a lot of work. Thankfully I had an awesome team and fabulous church support, so the week went off with very few hitches. . . unless you count the day I did the entire closing ceremony with my pants unzipped.

We used Lifeway’s Journey Off the Map theme this year and since there is a store about three miles from home, it was super easy to run in and out as needed. So here’s my shout out to the KC Skyview location, “Thanks for all the help.” If they didn’t have it, they found it. Plus, what we didn’t use, we can return. Awesome!

Our offering this year benefitted the Baptist Global Response organization and the children voted to buy chickens with their money. For $25, the organization will send 10 chickens to those in need and will educate recipients on the best way to raise and sustain a flock for years to come. With a friendly boys v. girls competition, the week’s offering totaled more than $311 as the girls edged out the boys on the very last day.

With 66 children registered, three professions of faith, and a whole lot of fun going on, I would say it was a pretty wonderful week at Park Hill Baptist Church. I (almost) can’t wait for next year!

Wonderful, Crazy, Exhausting Summer?

I’m finally home from an eight-day trek across South Dakota with my husband and son and I can’t wait to share all the details of our quintessential family vacation. It was a perfect getaway for our four year old and fabulous for mom and dad too. We only stopped at “boring” places a few times along the way, and judging by the little guy’s level of engagement, they couldn’t have been that tedious.

While I’m eager to share the entire itinerary with you, it will have to wait, because I promptly put on my VBS director hat and my MOMS Club president hat this week and will be hosting a houseful tonight to decorate a fabulous float for the Parkville Independence Day parade. . . of course that was after a two-hour board meeting this morning. Come on August! No really, I’m literally going 90 to nothin’ right now, but I’m loving almost every minute. Just don’t ask my husband his thoughts on these matters. I think he’s cooperative because objecting would be futile (and, of course, he loves me).

I know I haven’t written in a while and I miss it terribly, but when I revived Small Talk Mama earlier this year I promised to put my family and life in front of this little blog. So while I’m sure you’ve missed all my wonderful tips, tricks and motherly insight, ha ha, there will be more to come; I promise. Just let me first fulfill my roles for which I so eagerly volunteered and I’ll settle back into the task at hand. Which raises my curiosity to how most folks are spending their summers. What about you? What’s been the best, craziest or most exhausting part of your summer thus far?

Strike Up Summer with Free Bowling for Kids

Strike Up Summer with Free Bowling for Kids

RettBowl2So you probably already know that last week was Spring Break here and we played host to my sister and two thirteen-year-old girls from Oklahoma. The trip was meant to be an inexpensive change-of-scenery trek, so we tried to keep ourselves busy doing fun little activities about town. One afternoon, we decided to hit the local bowling lanes for a few hours, which was my four-year-old son’s first foray into the sport. Of course foot stomping, tears and frustration followed, but when the bumpers finally went up he was a happy guy (thank you bowling alley guy who saw the tears, offered the lane next door and raised the bumpers to boot).

If you notice the presence of not one, but two bowling balls in the picture, you get the idea of why he was so upset. Yes, we finally got the green ball out of the gutter and moved on to happier times. Although it was a bit stressful at first, I would definitely do it again (and I think he would too), and thanks to the Kids Bowl Free program we can surely get our fill in the months to come, and maybe even then some.

Yes, I said FREE bowling! Simply visit the Kids Bowl Free site and locate a participating U.S. or Canadian bowling alley near you. This program is designed by bowling centers to give back to the community and provide a safe, secure, and fun way for kids to spend time during the summer. Children whose age does not exceed a limit by a participating bowling center are eligible to register for two free games a day (shoe rental required) all summer long, courtesy of the participating bowling centers along with certain schools and organizations. That’s an awesome deal, I’d say!

So if you’re looking for us in the heat of the coming summer, we’ll be enjoying the AC and knockin’ down some pins at the local lanes. I hope you’ll join us.
