A Little Red, White and Blue Love

A Little Red, White and Blue Love

Did you proudly fly your flag yesterday? Our house was decked out in its finest patriotic prowess, but I have to confess that I may have gotten a little jump on my Americana this year by decorating on Memorial Day way back in May. I figured I could get just over a month of patriotic punch if I started early, and who doesn’t love a little red, white and blue as we tumble headlong into the sizzling months of summer. Between Memorial Day and Independence Day, falls Flag Day, so the reasons to celebrate just keep coming.

Here’s a little peek at what my family has been looking at for the last several weeks. I actually appear not to be behind (for once).

I crafted this large wooden flag out of old fence pickets. A simple wash of paint shows off the weathered wood grain.

I purchased this patriotic sign for just a few dollars after Independence Day last year. It complements the large wooden flag on the back deck.

I really don’t know why I’ve hung onto this tattered plastic flag for so many years, but it’s the perfect addition to my red geranium on the front porch steps.

This oversized paper ribbon adorns our front door, and you can learn how to make your own right here at Small Talk Mama.

I love this fun fabric banner hanging from our fireplace. You can whip up this cheap and easy project just in time for Independence Day.

This red, white and blue bunting hangs from our front deck railing and welcomes everyone with a big ol’ punch of color.

Of course we also proudly fly our American flag from a pole at the front of the house!

My Knock Out Roses Were Almost KO’d

My Knock Out Roses Were Almost KO’d

Knock Out roses

My Knock Out® roses have had quite the journey here at The Three-Acre Wood, but this spring as I watched and waited for signs of life from my three beauties by the curb I quickly realized that my girls were hurting. I’m not sure if it was last year’s Japanese Beetle infestation, the unusually long, cold winter or a combination of both, but I was afraid my rose bushes were gone for good.

After a long wait, I started to see signs of life as a few little green leaves appeared, mainly from the deepest parts of the plants. I did a bit of research on the best way to care for these ailing gals and decided to heavily prune them to about 18″ from the ground. Ugh, this was so disheartening (and thorny)!

I’m happy to say that all three of the Knock Out roses are gaining some momentum this spring, but they aren’t real attractive at this point. Several branches have green leaves growing, they are gaining a bit of height and a single small rose actually bloomed this morning!

I’m hoping that if I baby them through the summer, they will reward me with their usual splash of color come this fall or next spring.

A Photographic Kind of Mother’s Day

A Photographic Kind of Mother’s Day

I hope all you mamas out there had a wonderful Mother’s Day! I celebrated all weekend and across two states, spending time with my own Mom and family in Oklahoma and celebrating the day with my son and husband back in Missouri. It was a lot of driving, but I truly had a couple of great days.

Mother's Day

The Mother/Daughter Banquet at Verdigris FBC was a lot of fun. The decorations were adorable, the food was good and the giveaways were awesome! I came home with the new “Magnolia Table” cookbook.

Sunday started out with a Weight Watchers conscious breakfast casserole, prepared the night before by my husband. I’ll share that recipe with y’all later this week, because it was really yummy (thankfully there were leftovers for this morning’s breakfast). I also received some wonderful cards, flowers and decorated cookies from my husband and son. My big surprise gift was a new Canon Rebel T6i camera — just what I always wanted! I immediately thought it was a pretty lavish gift for Mother’s Day but hubby reassured me that it was also my fifteen-year anniversary gift, which happens later this month, so I graciously accepted. Like I was going to make him send it back. . . *grin*

I charged the camera battery while we were at church and my afternoon was filled with lots of photo ops and fun, so I’m sharing a few of my favorite moments through the lens of my new weapon.

Mother's Day

This was my first subject through the lens of my new Mother’s Day camera. I’m digging the detail, even if grapes aren’t so exciting.

Mother's Day

This photo of my son and his imagination was taken  through the Mother’s Day flowers on our dining room table.

We let the girls do some serious free ranging this afternoon. Hens happy. Bugs Beware.

Our son doesn’t have a dog, but chickens can be a pretty good substitute.
