Something’s Fishy!

Something’s Fishy!

We added three new faces (and fins) to our family this week with the addition of our son’s long-awaited little fish. This boy has been begging for pet fish for weeks, and with our 10-day vacation earlier this month and a super full summer we managed to put off the purchase for quite some time. But let me say, this child was patient and persistent! So when we finally had a free evening earlier this week, we made the leap splash back into fish ownership, even if on a small scale (no pun intended).

We purchased a petite round tank from Wal-Mart with a fun color-changing light and small filter. We then picked out three small cold water fish, including a goldfish, black and gold fish and a tiny minnow. It wasn’t really the fish fantasy our son had in mind; but as the beginner that he is, we thought our choices were pretty smart.

As the former parents of a seriously old goldfish, hubs and I were comfortable setting up the tank for our new fishy friends and we went through all the necessary steps to make the transition as successful as possible. . . including the emphasis to our son that fish are tricky and sometimes die without obvious reason.

Watching three fish swim around and around in a round tank can be rather mesmerizing and my son and I spent at least half an hour snuggled up on the rug watching the little guys (or girls) swim off their little fins. Unfortunately, in just the brief period between fish freedom and bedtime two of the three fellas swam behind the filter and became stuck. . . as in seriously sucked to the intake grill. Yikes! We unplugged the culprit for the night and resigned ourselves to returning the first tiny tank and purchasing a new one. I cannot have that kind of fishicide on my hands!

After one last look at our fishy pets, their new guard cat (just work with me on that), and our sweet little sleeping son I drifted into a deep dreamy sleep of my own. The next thing I heard, at a quarter ’til six, was my son frantically calling his dad to help his goldfish stuck under a rock!

Footsteps, footsteps, flush and footsteps.

I quickly jumped out of bed to find a sad little face watching only two fish swim around and around in a round tank. *sigh*

“Incredibles 2” Falls Short of This Parent’s Approval

“Incredibles 2” Falls Short of This Parent’s Approval

I don’t normally do a lot of movie reviews here at Small Talk Mama, but as the mother of an impressionable seven-year-old boy I wanted to pass along a few thoughts about Disney-Pixar’s latest animated film, Incredibles 2. While this movie pulled in $180 million during its opening weekend at the box office, I personally wish we had saved the family some money and waited another 14 years to rent the DVD.

The sequel to Incredibles, released in 2004, picked up right where the first film left off and kicked into high gear immediately. Unfortunately, the theme was very similar to that of the original movie. Superheroes are still outlawed because of the collateral damage inflicted during crime fighting, so the beloved Parr family has to weigh the pros and cons of breaking the law to catch the bad guys. Sound familiar?

Basically I felt like I was watching the same movie as the original with different bad guys plus gender role reversal fun. Mr. Incredible becomes a stay-at-home dad and takes a backseat to Elastigirl’s crime-fighting prowess and new-found fame, but it is all short lived as an entire cast of crime fighters is hypnotized and manipulated by a smart and deeply disturbed evildoer. It seems that this new criminal’s only motive is revenge for a murder that happened several years in the past.

Unfortunately, this murder is more than alluded to in this PG-rated animated flick. While we don’t actually see the gun being fired, we do see the weapon, the scared faces of the victims and the evil aftermath of blame and hate. In this mom’s opinion, It was a bit too real for little ones, especially in this age of violence and disregard for human life.

The pursuit of revenge is not this PG criminal’s only fault, because you can add potty mouth to the list of wrongs. Okay, so the gratuitous cursing was not over the top for most viewers (i.e. the grownups who loved the first film when they were 14 years younger), but I sure wished I had used a bit more parental guidance before I sat down with my young son. The poor language choices simply left me bewildered and wondering why, but it did make a negative impact on my seven-year-old son.

While Incredibles 2 was not nearly as fun as the first flick, it did have some entertaining, witty and action-packed moments. As a stay-at-home mom, I did appreciate seeing a superhero father embrace domestic life without a huge amount of finesse and dignity. Unfortunately, I don’t believe this film included enough finer moments to outweigh the missteps with a younger audience, which means it fell short of this particular parent’s approval.

A Photographic Kind of Mother’s Day

A Photographic Kind of Mother’s Day

I hope all you mamas out there had a wonderful Mother’s Day! I celebrated all weekend and across two states, spending time with my own Mom and family in Oklahoma and celebrating the day with my son and husband back in Missouri. It was a lot of driving, but I truly had a couple of great days.

Mother's Day

The Mother/Daughter Banquet at Verdigris FBC was a lot of fun. The decorations were adorable, the food was good and the giveaways were awesome! I came home with the new “Magnolia Table” cookbook.

Sunday started out with a Weight Watchers conscious breakfast casserole, prepared the night before by my husband. I’ll share that recipe with y’all later this week, because it was really yummy (thankfully there were leftovers for this morning’s breakfast). I also received some wonderful cards, flowers and decorated cookies from my husband and son. My big surprise gift was a new Canon Rebel T6i camera — just what I always wanted! I immediately thought it was a pretty lavish gift for Mother’s Day but hubby reassured me that it was also my fifteen-year anniversary gift, which happens later this month, so I graciously accepted. Like I was going to make him send it back. . . *grin*

I charged the camera battery while we were at church and my afternoon was filled with lots of photo ops and fun, so I’m sharing a few of my favorite moments through the lens of my new weapon.

Mother's Day

This was my first subject through the lens of my new Mother’s Day camera. I’m digging the detail, even if grapes aren’t so exciting.

Mother's Day

This photo of my son and his imagination was taken  through the Mother’s Day flowers on our dining room table.

We let the girls do some serious free ranging this afternoon. Hens happy. Bugs Beware.

Our son doesn’t have a dog, but chickens can be a pretty good substitute.
