Wildlife Flock to Homemade Seed Cakes

Wildlife Flock to Homemade Seed Cakes

Winter finally arrived a couple of weeks ago and with it came freezing temps and a light layer of snow. Unfortunately for our local wildlife, we’ve been so busy traveling, celebrating and reclaiming our home after the holidays that we haven’t been supplementing their food as quickly as we normally do.

So yesterday morning I pulled out one of my homemade seed cakes I made and stored last year and hung it outside the house. After a couple of hours about town, we came home to oodles of squirrels and a variety of birds already partaking of this tasty treat. My little guy and I sat for quite some time just watching them scramble for the food (and I felt terrible that I hadn’t hung it out sooner).

If you are interested in making your own homemade seed cakes, you can read and print the recipe at Seed Cake Recipe for the Birds. They are super simple and fun to make, and they apparently store for quite some time in a plastic baggy. Just make sure they are nice and dry before sealing.

Bows Give Personality to Crafted Cards

Mojo428Mojo Monday set forth their final sketch challenge until the new year, and thankfully I needed a couple of cute Christmas cards for my son’s preschool teachers, which meant I just had to make time amidst all the holiday hustle and bustle to whip up some fun little cards.

I used papers from the Recollections Christmas Noel 12×12 paper pack and some white card stock from my stash. I inked the edges with white and green and pink pastels, and added stitching around the outer edges. I also punched a small shape for each of the cards to add a little flair to the white tags and embossed each tag with a different snowflake pattern. The bows were the final touch; and as you can see, they give each card a completely different personality.

Merry Christmas and thanks for popping by for a peek.

It has been a cold, windy couple of days here in the Midwest so I decided to stay inside and play with some fun and festive Christmas paper. These little cards were created using the Mojo Monday sketch challenge from this week, but they also go right along with the current Cards in Envy theme challenge, “Put Some Extra Layers On.” I think I counted at least seven layers on one of the cards, and that’s not including the twine and staple. I used Recollections Cozy Lodge 12×12 paper pad for both cards, plus a scrap piece of wood paper I had hanging out around the house. Of course, I inked my edges and added some brads, twine Stickles and such for the finishing touches. I’m kind of in an Adirondack kind of mood these days, so this paper was the perfect choice for these cozy Christmas cards.
