Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School was “Out of This World”

Oh my goodness, we had another great Vacation Bible School at church last week. I’m never sure who has more fun — me or the kids!! At any rate, we had sixty-one smiling faces come through our doors in five days and that was almost double the number we had last year. We also had over thirty teachers, helpers, and go-to girls and guys help us each day and that isn’t counting the folks behind the scenes praying, canvasing neighborhoods, decorating (and redecorating when items fell to the floor) and attending to all the little things that need to be… Continue reading »

“Monster Trucks” is Family Friendly Flick

What do you do during your last few hours of what will surely be the last of a string of sick days? Why, see a movie, of course! My son and I have been housebound this week, but he was feeling well enough to hit the movie theatre for a good old-fashioned kid flick, so I rolled the dice with the PG-rated “Monster Trucks” movie. My son really wanted to see this one and I thought the trailers seemed cute and pretty benign for a six-year-old boy and his mom. We try to stick to G-rated movies as much as… Continue reading »

A Look Back at 2016, According to the Stats

It’s always fun to revisit the past year and see how it all shaped up, because I’m always so surprised to see which posts were popular according to the stats that be. I can definitely say that most of the posts that are my favorite rarely rank high in terms of traffic, but those simple surprises make year-end tracking so interesting. So as the year comes to an end, I’m taking a look back at 2016 and Small Talk Mama’s top posts according to you, the readers. Interestingly enough, several of the posts making the list were not even written this year. I hope you enjoy the… Continue reading »

The Bats are Back

When we first moved into our home four years ago we used to spy a few bats feasting in our backyard on a fairly regular basis, but somewhere along the way they seemed to move on to better living spaces or tastier places. This made me sad long before the rise of the Zika virus and the new suburban bat lovers who are suddenly embracing these mosquito-eating machines. So imagine my delight this week when I stepped out onto the deck and spied two bats speeding back and forth across our backyard with seemingly ravenous appetites. Maybe it was just coincidence, but this… Continue reading »

Ten Tips to “Avon Lady” Success

I really want you to be successful in your new venture and hope that a few of these tips will help you avoid some pitfalls along the way. No, I’m not an Avon lady, but I once was. In my first year as a representative, I managed my own team, saw a net profit and even achieved President Club status (and I have the Mrs. Albee to prove it). Unfortunately… Continue reading »

Small Talk’s Top Posts of 2015

As the year rapidly comes to an end, it’s always fun to see where the last year took us and how my blogging life was received. After the complete meltdown of Small Talk Mama the fall before, I was forced to make some decisions about the future of my little space of bloggy bliss; and after much deliberation, a false-start and returning to my first love, Small Talk Mama was reborn (slowly) and is still in the repairing process. I continually discover old posts that simply vanished forever, and I’m just so sure those were some of my best stuff. Okay, enough wound… Continue reading »

Dining Etiquette Made Simple

In just a couple of days many of us will be hosting or attending a large family gathering , and for some of you it will probably be a more formal affair than most dinners at home. If you’re like me, just figuring out which glass is mine or the proper use order of forks can be daunting. It’s not like I was born in a barn or anything, but we also didn’t host too many fancy sit-downs either.  Thankfully the nice folks at Liberty Tabletop have simplified the whole process of when to use what, what to do with it when you’re finished… Continue reading »
